It's Not Easy | No es Facil

He never said it was going to be easy

Joshua 24:1-2,15-18     Ephesians 5:21-32     John 6:60-69

Being a follower of Jesus and living the message of the Gospel is not easy.  When did he ever say it was going to be easy?  He actually told it that it would not be easy.

Today in the Gospel we see the reaction of many of the people and their inability to accept his teaching on “I am the bread of life”.  They cannot accept his words “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life.” They choose to walk away and return to their former way of life. His words were too hard to accept.

Today we continue to be challenged by the teachings of the Gospel and apply them to concrete situations in our society.  The Popes of our modern era have all spoken against the death penalty and Pope Francis clarified the Church’s teaching earlier this month: the death penalty is not acceptable.  Many American Catholics got upset at this (it wasn’t much of an issue for Catholics in other parts of the world) and found it hard to accept.  Since when was living the Gospel supposed to be easy?

Peter, as he struggles with the teachings of Jesus, says: “To whom shall we go? You have the words of everlasting life.”  Let these be our words as we struggle and are challenged from time to time, recognizing that in Jesus we have the path to everlasting life.  Where else can we go?
