Reconciliation / Reconciliación

Reconciliation

In the sacrament of reconciliation (confession) we encounter the power of the merciful Christ in a most profound way and find reconciliation with God and God’s people.

The power of the sacrament of reconciliation begins with the penitent’s private prayer and reflection with God and concludes with the sacramental rite with the ordained priest. Below you will find an examination of conscience to help you prepare for the sacrament of reconciliation.

Confessions at St. Ignatius: Saturdays at 3:30pm-by appointment.

Communal Penance Liturgies are celebrated in Advent and Lent

Preparing/Praying with the Scriptures:    Read Matthew, chapter 5 and/or Luke, chapter 15.

An Examination of Conscience

Do I seek God with all my heart? Am I faithful to prayer?

- Do I learn the teachings of the Church and strive to keep them?

- Do I respect God and others by my choice of words, avoiding those that give offense?

- Do I participate at Mass on Sundays and holy days?

Have I found that I have attitudes of:

- Envy and hatred? Sloth and indifference?

- Materialism and sensualities? Injustices and favoritisms?

- Lack of confidence in God, in others & in myself?

- Lack of Faith, of Hope, of Charity?

Do I act with:

- taking advantage of people and situations? Anger?

- Pride? Spite? Discrimination? Hypocrisy? Cynicism?

- Selfishness? Cowardice? Laziness?

Do I allow myself to be led by:

- comfort? Food? Drink? Avarice? Money? Personal gain?

- Pleasure? Business? Personal welfare above and beyond

- that of others?

Disrespect…

- for the human person, for the holiness of all life

- and the gifts of Creation? Unfaithfulness in my state of life?

- Evil? Error? Superstition? Violence? Revenge? Lies and half-truths?

Going to Confession

  • After prayer and reflection the penitent goes to the priest:
  • Simple greeting and sign of the cross.
  • Say about how long it’s been since your last confession.
  • Confess your sins. Tell the priest the basic areas in your life in which you need forgiveness (please avoid a “laundry list” approach).
  • The priest will share a few words with you and give the penance.
  • Pray an act of contrition (there are many versions, one is listed below**)
  • Prayer of absolution by the priest.
  • Go in peace.

** LORD JESUS, YOU CHOSE TO BE CALLED THE FRIEND OF SINNERS. BY YOUR SAVING DEATH AND RESURRECTION FREE ME FROM MY SINS. MAY YOUR PEACE TAKE ROOT IN MY HEART AND BRING FORTH A HARVEST OF LOVE, HOLINESS AND TRUTH. AMEN.

- Envidias y odios? Perezas e indiferencias?

- Materialismos y sensualidades? Injusticias y favoritismos?

- Complejos y desconfianzas?

- Falta de Fe, de Esperanza y de Caridad?

¿Encuentro que actúo con:

- abuso? Ira? Orgullo? Desprecio?

- Discriminación? Hipocresía? Cinismo?

- Egoísmo? Cobardía? Pereza?
